Before study about the education boards in India we have to know what education is and why it is important?

What is Education and why it is important?

Education is one of the most important thing in the life of human being. Education works as the light in the darkness. That’s why somebody says “Education is the passport to the future, and for tomorrow belongs to those people who prepare for it today”. It teaches the way of living.

Only education is the thing through which people know what their rights are. That’s why politicians gives hundred of things to the people, but doesn’t gives the way to education.

The real meaning of education is learning either from society, school, college or peoples. An education make a person socially, mentally or economically developed. For the strong foundation of a country, education is very important. So that people of that country is educated. Because good leadership comes from educated group of people.

There are three levels of education mentioned below:

  • College
  • Higher Studies

To get good leaders, every country has its own education system. In Indian education system their are different education boards according to which institutes set up their curriculum and activities.

Today, we talk about the functions, features, benefits, curriculum, syllabus, focus, promotion and subjects of different boards of Indian education system.

Following are the boards in Indian educational system:

  1. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
  2. Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)
  3. State Board
  4. International Baccalaureate (I.B.)
  5. International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

The full form of CBSE is Central Board Of Secondary Education. It is managed by Union Government of India. It was officially formed in the year 1962 on the day of 3 November. It’s headquaters is in New Delhi, India. CBSE is formed to make a common standard and platform of education for every student in the country. It is a national level board of education. Almost all of the national tests based on CBSE pattern. The official website of CBSE for student and staff is https://www.cbse.gov.in.

Objective:

The main objective of formation of CBSE boards is to provide the requirement of education for those students whose parents have transferable jobs like army, police, government divisions or sectors.

Curriculum:

CBSE Board follows the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) curriculum or pattern. NCERT is a organization which conduct research and find out innovative ideas for the progress of education.

Affiliations:

CBSE affiliates most of the private schools and the most famous Kendriya Vidhalaya schools. According to a survey in 2019 CBSE is affiliates with 21,271 schools.

Promotions:

For every student a passing criteria is set by different educational boards. Although CBSE is also have promotional criteria, each student has must to obtain 33% marks in all subjects include theory and practical. For those students who so ever do not pass this criteria has to pass a special exam known as compartment in the month of July. And those students who also fails in the compartment exam or fail in two or more subjects, he/she must rewrite or give exams of all the subjects taken in the next year. 

*CBSE Board is common in India, so moving from one state to another is not a problem. 

Focus of CBSE Board:

  • Teachers tries to make thinking of students innovative and creative.
  • Provides killed learning by adding more job oriented programs.
  • Focuses more on the competitive exams like JEE mains, NEET, AIMPT or any other entrance test.
  • Provides maximum options after 10th ( Arts, Inter-arts, Commerce, Medical, Non-Medical).
  • Syllabus of CBSE is easier than other boards due to lesser number of subjects.
  • Secondary subjects like Environment, Education or any other are not necessary.
  • Subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology are comes under the topic of Science.
  • History, Civics and Geography are comes under the topic of Social Science.
  • CBSE has a branch name as F.S.C (Foreign School Cell), which is formed so that students outside the Indian region are given proper academic and administrative support.
  • CBSE syllabus is well defined, well structured, highly managed and controlled.
  • A number of private schools affiliates with CBSE board and formed a group.
  • CBSE is named as topmost education board in India due to its standard form of syllabus and most of entrance test based on its syllabus.

Subjects of CBSE:

Before 10th:

  • Languages Group-L (Languages differ according to state wise)
  • Main Subjects – Group-A1 (Mathematics, Science, Social Science)
  • Other Academic Electives – Group-A2 (Like Computer Applications, Music, Vocal, Home Science, Painting, NCC etc)
  • Skill Subjects (Differ time to time based on the opportunities)
  • Co-scholastic Areas (Art Education)

After 10th:

  • Languages Group-L (Languages differ according to state wise)
  • Academic Electives – Group-A (According to chosen stream)
  • Skill Subjects (Differ time to time based on the opportunities)

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)

The full form of ICSE is Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. ICSE has completely different standard
comparitivily to the other educational boards. It’s syllabus is according to international Indian standard. It’s syllabus is focused more on competitive rather than theoretical i.e the concepts are more deeper than other education boards.

ICSE was first introduce or register in 1967 under societies registration act. It was formed to complete the study requirements compared to overseas Cambridge schools. It is completely English board. ICSE is a private non-governmental board.

Objective:

The main objective of ICSE board is to provide education with deeper concepts. Focuses more on concept rather than theory. ICSE syllabus is designed such that in primary classes base of the subject are introduced and further more details are discussed.

Curriculum:

ICSE follows COUNCIL FOR THE INDIAN SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS. Both ICSE and ISC boards comes under this.

Affiliations:

About 2,300 schools are affiliated with ICSE board. There are some criteria which every school has to follow to get an ICSE affiliation.

  • No Objection Certificate
  • Recognition Certificate
  • Registered Land Certificate
  • Registration certificate of company/society/trust/foundation
  • Affidavit for Non-proprietary and non-commercial nature of school
  • Land Registration and /or lease document
  • Fire Safety Certificate
  • Health & Sanitation Certificate
  • Safe Drinking Water
  • Building Safety Certificate
  • Balance sheet/ Financial Status for last three years
  • Salary paid through ECS/Cheque
  • Infrastructure details photographs (All kinds of laboratories, top view that is roof of a school including playground and all 4 sides of boundary wall)
  • Staff EPF deduction certificate (Most Latest EPF Challan in the name of the school)
  • Staff Salary Certificate
  • Reserve Fund (Jointly in the name of the Secretary of the School Manager, President and Principal)

Promotions:

Get promotion through ICSE board is the toughest among all boards.

Focus of ICSE Board:

  • The students has to remember large amount of concepts due to detailed syllabus
  • ICSE focuses more on concepts rather than theory
  • English is the main subject for ICSE board
  • Internals, assignments and practical are given to improve the performance of students
  • ICSE focuses equal on all subjects
  • In ICSE one way teaching pattern is not followed it is teaching and learning.

Before 10th:

State Boards

State boards are the most famous boards in the country. Every state has its own education board. State board refers to the education boards run by state government. State board syllabus is designed such that who so ever wants to continue their study in local circumstances and greater emphasis on local language.

Every state has its own state board for providing basic education facilities to the students. It is one of the top education boards in india.

Curriculum:

State board curriculum is under the education department of state government. It’s syllabus, working days all are selected by them.

Affiliations:

All the government and most of the schools upto middle level are affiliated with state board. State boards have its own benefits due to integrated syllabus with regional language.

Promotions:

For every student a passing criteria is set by different educational boards. Although state boards also have different different promotional criteria but basically each student has must to obtain 33% marks in all subjects include theory and practical.

For those students who so ever do not pass this criteria has to pass a special exam known as compartment in the month of July. And those students who also fails in the compartment exam or fail in two or more subjects, he/she must rewrite or give exams of all the subjects taken in the next year. Pass the state board examinations are quite easy than passing in CBSE and ICSE boards.

Focus of State Boards:

  • Students has to know know about regional language and literature
  • To provide essential study to the students
  • Distribution of basic knowledge to all
  • Syllabus is set according to the public service jobs of that state
  • In favour of those students whose parents have non-transferable jobs
  • Allows students to score 5% to 10% to get easy admission in the colleges
  • It helps the students to study and focus on extracurricular activities at the same time. 

Subjects:

The subjects are usually limited like other boards. Regional language is integrated in the syllabus. Some states boards follow NCERT books curriculum.

International Baccalaureate (I.B.)

Full form of I.B. is International Baccalaureate which is also known as International Baccalaureate Organization. IBO is an international education foundation. The headquaters of IBO is in Geneva, Switzerland which was found in 1968. It is one of the top education board in India.

The study standards of IBO is totally different it’s as high as expected. It is the international board. It is not very popular yet.

Objective:

Provide the latest international study programme. It’s syllabus is very balanced for the all around development of the student.

Curriculum:

Thee curriculum of I.B. board is managed by I.B. world school. The curriculum is divided into three programs:

#1. Primary Year Program (PYP):

PYP the primary year program, prepares the students for upcoming competitive world and develop the capacity to participate in the world activities. It makes the student caring, skilled, active and leaners. PYP is for kids kindergarten to 5th standard.

  • Language
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • Arts
  • Personal, Social and Physical Education

#2. Middle Year Program (MYP):

This is the main base for students. Those students studied seriously in middle year program are suppose to be well qualified in the future. Middle Year Program make connection between study and the students. 6th to 10th standards comes under MYP.

  • 1st Language
  • 2nd Language
  • Humanities (History and Geography)
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry Physics)
  • Mathematics including Numbers, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics
  • Arts (Visual Art and Performing Art)

#3. Diploma Program (DP):

Diploma Program is for higher studies including class 11th to class 12th. This program develops the excellence knowledge of the students to vast knowledge according to their interests.

Career Related Program (CRP):

CRP refers to career related education. It prepares the students for making their career. It is for mature students.
